Welcome to our first written article here at Duke Football Talk. As you know, we have been exclusively in the podcast space for a few years now. But we felt it was time to expand what we do even further.
5 Deep is a series we will bring you that asks players, coaches, and others related to the Duke Football program 5 quick questions that are completely random. Our goal is that you, the fan, get to know these people on a deeper level. Our first choice for the 5 Deep series? Number 5 himself: senior WR, Jalon Calhoun.
DFBT: Jalon, how is this year (your senior year) different than your previous 3 years at Duke?
Jalon: It’s a special year, especially with this new coaching staff and new culture coming in. I feel like I have put in more work, have become a different monster out there on the field, and focused on leading my receiver room.
DFTB: What video games are you currently into? Who’s the best gamer on the team?
Jalon: It’s crazy, you know, I play football, but I’ve gotten into MLB. And the crazy thing is, I didn’t know anything about baseball. My squad is the Braves. I also play 2K, Madden, Apex, it doesn’t matter. I’m the best on the team. (We told him we’d ask his teammates to verify.)
DFTB: We’ve seen you do a little cooking on IG, so tell us what your go-to meal is, Chef Jalon?
Jalon: I’m a breakfast guy. I’ll eat breakfast at night. My go-to meal is scrambled egg omelets with bacon and pancakes.
DFTB: Who was your childhood NFL hero? And who is a guy you follow now?
Jalon: Deion Sanders…Primetime. That’s where my Twitter name comes from. Also my favorite receiver has always been Odell Beckham. The way he plays, his passion for the game, and everything he does for the game.
Bonus Question
DFBT: Who was the coach who made the biggest impact on you, and what did you learn from them?
Jalon: I’m afraid to say. I love all my coaches. But I’d probably say my junior year (of high school) with Coach Hargitt. He was my offensive coordinator. He came in, kind of like a similar situation here. First year coming in and we didn’t know how it was going to go. He came in, and he actually changed my life on and off the field.
Looking forward to a big year from Jalon! 😤 Glad to learn a little more about the man behind the jersey.
